Scenes that I never tire of observing are the parrots that feed hanging upside down from the branch, balancing with their claws, pecking a fruit with all the calmness in the world. A skill that transforms parrots, macaws, parakeets and macaws into true acrobats of nature
Anyone who has ever observed a macaw or a parakeet feeding has certainly been enchanted by a curious scene: hanging only by one of its legs, or completely upside down, the animal seems to defy gravity while continuing to eat with the greatest tranquility.
What seems curious to us is, in fact, an adaptation refined by millions of years of evolution.
Many parrots have a habit that gives away everything about observing before clicking.

And that detail—that simple gesture of eating upside down—says more about nature photography than any camera setup.
While many birds perch and peck in front, the tiriba hangs, balances and accesses fruits that others cannot reach. This behavior is the difference between getting the photo and just registering the presence.
Psittacines — a family that includes macaws, parrots, parakeets, jandayas, macaws and tuins — are among the most skilled birds on the planet when it comes to moving between branches.
While many species need to keep their bodies balanced on a perch to feed, parrots have turned just about any position into an opportunity to reach fruits, seeds, and flowers.
It doesn't matter if the food is above, below, or hidden among leaves: they simply rotate the body and continue the meal.

Much of this ability comes from your feet.
Psittacines have a configuration called zygodactyl: two fingers point forward and two backwards. This shape works as an extremely efficient pincer, allowing it to hold thin branches, climb trunks and remain hanging for long periods with great stability. While other birds just support themselves, parrots actually "grab" the branch.
While feeding, parrots, macaws and macaws play a key role in maintaining the forests. By transporting fruits and seeds over great distances, they contribute to the regeneration of vegetation and help numerous plant species to disperse naturally.

Another impressive feature is the use of the nozzle.
Far beyond breaking hard seeds, it works as a true third support. During climbing, the beak holds the branch while the paws reposition the body. In many moments, the bird distributes its weight between its two legs and its beak, making its movements extremely safe.
It's like watching a climber using hands and feet at the same time.
What does this teach you about photography? That The right angle is not always the obvious one. The most interesting photo of the tiriba is not the profile photo on the branch. It is the upside down, with the green of the forest as a background and that white ring around the eye clearly visible. Position yourself from the bottom up. Let gravity work in your favor in the composition.

Nature rarely chooses the easy way out. She finds the most efficient.
When we see a macaw or a parrot hanging upside down, we are witnessing millions of years of adaptations that have transformed these birds into true acrobats of the crowns.
Maybe that's why photographing them is so fascinating. We never know what the next move will be. And it almost always challenges what we imagined possible.
Each flight takes with it much more than a meal: it also takes the future of the forest.
